Tribal automobile tag owners are NOT subject to the new State of Oklahoma policy put in place by the “Mason Treat Act” which went into effect Sept. 1, 2024, but it does affect you in a couple of ways.
The practical solution is that Tribal members who sell or trade a vehicle continue to keep their physical tags, and Tribal members who purchase a vehicle must request a paper tag, as out-of-state buyers are entitled to do under the new law.
The following instructions apply to Tribal tag owners who purchase a vehicle from a dealership:
- Remove your Tribal tag from your trade-in vehicle
- Tell the dealer you are registering with your Tribe, so you need
- A paper title (not an electronic one)
- A temporary paper tag
- Decline to provide email address or phone number or Tribal tag number to the dealership
- The Dealership will issue a temporary tag that expires in 10 days
- Tribal member must connect with the tag agency within 10 days, with documents, to get a temporary sticker
- Once the Tribal member has everything necessary to obtain a permanent tag, come to the tag agency within 60 days of purchase to get that tag
- Return your prior tag if necessary
