The Citizen Potawatomi Veterans Organization was officially formed on June 9, 2009, in Shawnee. All enrolled CPN veterans are eligible to be a member of the organization.
Meetings are 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at CPN North Reunion Hall, 1702 S. Gordon Cooper Dr., in Shawnee, OK. Meetings include a guest speaker or demonstration, viewing of a CPN Veterans Tribute Series DVD, and a short business meeting. Annual membership dues are $20.
Additional Information
The group has several plans in the development phase, including recognition and communication with Tribal members on active duty and welcoming them upon their return to the local Shawnee area, participation in the burial services of Tribal veterans by providing a flag detail, and providing the color guard for the Grand Entry during the annual Family Reunion Festival. Members of the organization serve as guides for the Veterans Wall of Honor located in the Cultural Heritage Center (CHC) during the Family Reunion Festival.
Citizen Potawatomi Nation Veteran Memorial
The CPN Veteran Memorial, called the Wall of Honor, is located on the walls of the Cultural Heritage Center’s Long Room, within its Wédasé gallery. The names and accomplishments of our Tribal veterans are included in the displays. Photos, plaques, framed letters, awards, and decorations pay homage to warriors from our Nation who stepped forward when called.
More than just a nostalgic look into the past, the Wall of Honor reflects the ongoing sacrifices of our heroes today. As they return from their far-flung assignments, we will welcome them back, salute their accomplishments, and add their names to the Wall of Honor. Our Veteran Memorial honors both the living and those who sacrificed their lives to keep us all free.
We would like to include all Citizen Potawatomi veterans. If you are an enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and you are a veteran or a family member who is a CPN tribal member can send your name and Tribal enrollment number, a copy of your discharge papers (DD214’s) (or current station), a digital or physical version of a 5” x 7” or larger photo, and the veteran’s or next-of-kin’s current address to Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Veterans Wall of Honor, 1899 S. Gordon Cooper Dr., Shawnee, OK 74801-8699.
